World Masters Games are free to sportsperson of all aptitudes and most ages. The minimum age requirement ranges between 25 and 35 years depending on the sport. The seventh edition of the games will be scheduled at Sydney from 10 October to 18 October in 2009.
The International Masters Games Association (IMGA) was framed in 1995 from member of International Federations as the representative body of Masters Sport worldwide. This was to endorse lifelong competition, amity and understanding between mature sportspeople, not considering the age, gender, race, religion, or sport status. In 1985, the first World Masters Games was staged in Toronto. Since then, the games have also taken place in Aalborg, Aarhus and Herning (1989), Brisbane (1994), Portland, Oregon (1998), Melbourne (2002) and Edmonton (2005). The 2002 World Masters Games held in Melbourne, had attracted a record 24,886 competitors which was beyond the number of competitors participated in the Sydney Olympic Games held in the year 2000.
The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games will take place from 10-18 October 2009 and are expected to have more than 25,000 competitors from 100 countries taking active part in 28 sports. The average age the competitor is below 40s, however, there are many who fall well above that figure, together with several centenarians. It is an extraordinary opportunity to come across with people from around the globe and creating new and lasting friendships.
