World Games:

The World Games are the international sports events meant for sports and are not played in the Olympic Games. The game was first held in 1981. The World Games are controlled and administered by the International World Games Association (IWGA), under the aid of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). World Games are the main event for all the world level athletes who are marked by sporting exploits as well as by amity. The games provide the exceptional setting for hundreds and thousands of athletes from different sports and countries to unite in a festival of harmony and friendship across all boundaries. The World Games are celebrated over a period of 11 days. The games are started with the Opening Ceremony and conclude with the Closing Ceremony.

A number of sports that were on the curriculum of the World Games ultimately made it as Olympic sports, such as, triathlon or have been Olympic sports in the past like tug of war. Some of the sports that are presently held at the World Games are orienteering, body building, powerlifting, fin swimming, squash, netball, water skiing, casting, etc.

The sports that are incorporated in the World Games are restricted by the facilities available in the host city and not single new facilities may be put up for the games. Naturally, only a number of 25 and 35 sports are contested at any particular World Games. The number of sports that have been categorized as "invitational" are still played, but no records of giving medals to the winner have been found. The host may also give approval to a limited number of additional sports, which are not administered by the IWGA Member Federations, to feature on the Invitational Sports Program.
