The Women's Islamic Games is a multinational sports event. In this competition a wide range of games are played with competitors coming from countries around the world. This event started in 1993. The Islamic Federation of Women’s Sport (IFWS) take the initiative to organize this event.
The women athletes have to come across various obstacles because of the conflict between their longing for participating and their religious beliefs. To provide a gaming platform to the women athletes, the Women Sports Solidarity Council (Federation of Islamic women's sports) was formed with an agreement between Faezah Hashemi, the president of International Olympic Committee (IOC), Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sabah Alfhd, and Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani.
The Federation of Islamic women's sports employs following the framework of the Olympic Charter. The federation works with the sole objective to hold Olympic sports events while caring for Islamic principles and standards. It aims at strengthening harmony among Muslim women and the Islamic identity, encouraging superiority in women's sports, refusing racial and class intolerance in agreement with Islam to promote sporting culture, and form educational courses in various disciplines that are carried out in the program.
The Women Islamic Games has been held in 1993, 1997, 2001, and 2005 in Iran. The next game will be held in 2010 in the newly built stadium of Azadiye. The entire Muslim women of all nationalities are allowed to take part in the Games.
The game in Iran had attracted around 407 athletes from around 10 countries and participated in 7 sports. Kyrgyzstan won the first position with 27 medals. So on, the game continued fluttering its success flag. In the recent game held in 2005, it was the 4th edition where there were 1316 athletes from 44 countries and joined the game and playing in the 18 sports events. The first rank holding nation was Iran with 31 medals.
