The Universiade is the game for university athletes. It is an International multi-sport event which is organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name “Universiade” is taken from the combination of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is found remarkably in English as the World University Games or World Student Games. However, the latter game is meant to refer the competitions for sub-University grades students, as well. In 1923, an "International Universities Championship" was held under the patronage of the Union National des Étudiants François (UNEF). The Confédération Internationale des Étudiants (CIE) organized official "Summer Student World Championships" from 1924 and were renamed as “International University Games" in 1930. Later, since 1949, a biennial "Summer International University Sports Week" was organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and hence, became the "World University Games" in 1957. The events for women were took place in 1930.
The Summer Universiade held in 2009, formally known as the XXV Summer Universiade were celebrated most recently in Belgrade, Serbia from 1 July to 12 July 2009. This event has also been controlled by number of co-host cities mostly in Vojvodina (Serbian Autonomous Province), neighbor to Belgrade. The event that took place was the largest off all other events held ever in the city.
During the early 2004, the bidding process for the 2009 Summer Universiade games began. Along with Belgrade two another bid for the event, they were Monterrey in Mexico and Poznan in Poland. The decision went in favor of Belgrade because of the various major sporting events accredited to the city to host for Euro basket 2005, the 2005 European Volleyball Championship, the 2006 European Water Polo Championship, and the European Youth Olympic Festival 2007.
The future Universiade will be held in the year 2011. It was decided on January 16, 2007 that Shenzhen and Erzurum will bag the credit for hosting the 2011 Universiade.
