The Southeast Asian Games are indebted its genesis to the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games or SEAP Games. On May 22, 1958, different delegates from the countries in Southeast Asian peninsula participating and attending the 3rd Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan held a meeting and settled on the decision to establish a sport organization. The SEAP Games was conceptualized by Laung Sukhumnaipradit, then Vice-President of the Thailand Olympic Committee. They want that a regional sports event will help encourage cooperation, understanding and relations among varied countries in the Southeast Asian region.

The 25th edition of Southeast Asian Games will be holding in the year 2009 and is scheduled to be held in Vientiane, Laos. It will also be SEA Games 50th year since its setting up. In these years, Laos holds the honor of being host country for the first time in its history of SEA Games for the year 2009.

There were seven founding members, such as Thailand, Philippines, Malaya (now Malaysia), Laos, South Vietnam (now Vietnam), Burma (now Myanmar), and Cambodia. The Southeast Asian Games Federation numbers grew over time and Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Timor-Leste joined the ranks.

For the coming 25th Southeast Asian Games, the capital city Vientiane is the main area where the game will took place. Due to decades of war and lack of sufficient resources and finances, this insolvent communist country has reduced the number of sports to be contested at the recent SEA Games. It number of games declined to a proposed 25 games and that is far lesser than the 43 games being contested at the most recent SEA Games in Thailand, 2007.
