The Pan Arab Games are a provincial multi-sport event which is held between nations from the Arab World. The first Pan Arab Games were held in 1953 in Alexandria, Egypt. At first, it was intended that the game was to be held every four years. But, due to political turmoil and financial difficulties has made the event an unhinged one. The 11th Pan Arab Games took place in Egypt from 11 November to 26 November 2007. After the first session in 1953, the game was played on persistently. In 2007 Pan Arab Games, 22 countries participated in 32 events. These games were the largest in the games' history. At this year, 7 new events were introduced and 2000 more athletes participated than before in the previous year, making a total of 8000 Arab athletes. The year was remarkable as this was also the first time that some of the Arab football federations play a part with their first teams. Moreover, for the first time women athletes were allowed to participate at the 11th Pan-Arab Games.
The 12th edition of Pan Arab Games will be held in 2011. It will be held in Doha, Qatar. It will be the first time when the quadrennial multi-sport event will be held in a Gulf state. Qatar was awarded privileges to arrange the games beating Lebanon in the bidding process. According to Othman al-Saad, Arab Sports Federation secretary general the 12th session of the game holding at Qatar’s hosting would give the event lots more energy and implication in light of the huge capabilities and world-class sports facilities which Qatar owns.
