The Mediterranean Games is an international sport events held every four years. This game is mainly held for nations bordering the Mediterranean Sea, where Europe, Africa and Asia get together. The idea of holding the game was proposed at the 1948 Summer Olympics by Muhammed Taher Pasha, chairman of the Egyptian Olympic Committee. The proposal was approved and the game was first held in 1951. The first 10 sessions of the games took place always one year earlier the Olympics. But, from 1993 onwards, they were held the year subsequent to the Olympic Games.
The Mediterranean Games were launched on October 1951, in Alexandria, Egypt, in tribute of Muhammed Taher Pasha, the initiator of the game. In the first session, contests being held in 13 sports along with the participation of 734 athletes from 10 countries. From the success of the first session, the game was carried on ever since every 4 years without any interruption.
In 1955, in Barcelona, during the 2nd edition of the Games, the arrangement was decided of a Supervisory and Controlling Body for the Games. The decisions were finally turned up on June 16, 1961, and the committee was named, ICMG (International Committee for the Mediterranean Games).
The Mediterranean Games aim to establish an opportunity for peaceful athletic competition between youth from different continents, customs and religions. The game is, therefore, the medium for young people to get to know each other, appreciate each other and strengthen their bonding in a climate of amiable rivalry.
The Mediterranean Games, in terms of the grounding and symphony of the National Delegation, are held under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee and the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC).
The 2009 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the XVI Mediterranean Games will take place in Pescara, Italy, from 25 June to 5 July, 2009.
