The Jeux de la Francophonie is an amalgamation of imaginative and events of sports for French speaking nations. The event is held every four years since 1989, to a certain extent as a counterbalance to the Commonwealth Games. In this page, Ancient Olympic Games have thrown light at this event of French. We effectively bring out various information regarding Olympic Games and other major international competitions.

Jeux de la Francophonie are celebrated and the event is open to athletes and artists of the 55 member nations, 2 associate member nations and 13 observer nations of the Francophonie. In the competition Canada is represented by three teams: Quebec, New Brunswick and another team representing the rest of the country. The Belgian team is constrained of sportspersons from the French-speaking areas of the country.

The event was joined and participated by various athletes. But, the participation has always varied between 1,700 and 3,000 athletes and artists.

In the 2005 events held at Niamey in Niger, the games and cultural activities that were carried are:

  • In the sports there were Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Football (soccer), Judo, Table tennis, wrestling including both traditional style and demonstration.
  • Among the cultural activities there were Song, Fairy tale, Traditional inspiration dance, Poetry, Painting, Photography and Sculpture.

The first event of Jeux de la Francophonie was held in the year 1989 at Casablanca and Rabat in Morocco. The second session of the game held in 1994 in Paris Évry-Bondoufle, France. The 5th session of the game held in 2005 was the most recent. The game held from December 7 to17, 2005 in Niamey, Niger. Looking at the medal tally it is found that France got the first rank by winning 33 gold, 21 silver and 12 bronze. Just after France, Morocco ranked second and Egypt third.

The 6th session of the game will be held in 2009 in Beirut, Lebanon.
