The Islamic Solidarity Games is an international multi-sport event. The game is held every four r years. It involves the selected athletes of the Organization of the Islamic Conference. The Islamic Solidarity Games Federation (ISSF) is the association that is accountable for the direction and control of the Islamic Solidarity Games. The first Islamic Solidarity Games was held in 2005 in Saudi Arabia. Under the leadership of Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, Prince Abdulmajeed bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Makkah, opened at King Abdulaziz Sports City in Makkah; the first Islamic Solidarity Games was hosted by the Kingdom in four cities simultaneously: Makkah, Almadinah, Jeddah and Taif from 8 April to 20 April, 2005. In the first session of the game, Saudi Arabia took the first place by winning 24 gold medals, Egypt 2nd place with 14 gold medals and Kazakhstan 3rd with 13 gold medals.

There are at present 57 members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Non-Muslim populaces in the member countries are also permissible to take part in the Games.

The 2005 ISG included events for the disabled, together with two sources of soccer: futsal for the mentally handicapped and goal ball for the blind.

When the ISSF took the decision that the host for the 2009 ISG would be Iran, it was a great source of joy and pride for the nation. For the first time, the 2009 Islamic Solidarity Games will permit both male and female athletes to compete.
