The first Goodwill Games were held in Moscow in 1986. The game was held with the intention to ease tensions during the Cold War through friendly athletic competition between nations. The game featured 182 events and attracted more than 3,000 athletes representing 79 countries. Many athletes had made world records and these were set by Sergey Bubka (pole vault), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (heptathlon), and both the men and women's 200m cycle racing, by East Germany's Michael Huber and the Soviet Union's Erika Salumäe, respectively. In 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, world records were made by Mike Barrowman in the 200m breaststroke and Nadezhda Ryashkina in the 10km walk.
The 1994 Games were held in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This was the first competition since the Soviet Union had been reinstated by fifteen independent republics. Five world records were earned by Russians in the weightlifting section. Goodwill Games were the first major international event to feature beach volleyball and it appeared at the Olympics for the first time at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Ted Turner played the last Goodwill Games in 1998 in New York City.
After Turner, the games were later bought by Time Warner of Australia. It was he who organized the Brisbane 2001 Games, before broadcasting that it would be the very last. In the edition of 2001, majority of the medals were brought to home by Australia with a good number of 75.
