Asian games are synchronized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) under the direction of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The victors are awarded by medals in each event, with gold for the first position, silver for second and bronze for third. The game was started as a tradition in 1951.
The first Asian Games were held in 1951 at New Delhi. Since 1954, the games were held every four years. The inaugural game was cherished and athletes from around 11 nations participated featuring six sports- association football, athletics, basketball, cycling, swimming, and weight lifting. Year after year the popularity of the game has been escalating and more and more nation took part to it.
In the Asian games, only recognized nations are allowed to represent, but a few non-sovereign countries are permitted to take part. Just after the Second World War when numerous Asian countries got independence, they decided to start a new type of competition where there will no violence and should be strengthened by mutual understanding. With that spirit of oneness, the Asian Games were held.
